A Free Bus To Get Around The Seaport?

The Seaport District gondola dream is over, but another transportation fix is making the rounds: A (potentially free) bus service.

The proposal by the Seaport Transportation Management Association calls for a fleet of small buses that would circulate within the Seaport, making seven stops — including ones outside South Station, the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, and the Innovation and Design Building.

An office space crunch in Boston is getting some relief thanks to one of the city’s largest employers. John Hancock is consolidating its Boston operations to its 1.2M SF Back Bay campus, freeing up its 465K SF headquarters at 601 Congress St. as early as spring 2019. Manulife Financial, John Hancock’s parent company, owns the building and has decided to lease it out.

The insurance company is returning its headquarters to Back Bay, where it already has a 1.2M SF campus and employs over 2,000. Its 465K SF Seaport headquarters at 601 Congress St. employs 1,100 people, all of whom will be transferred by the end of 2018
